What the test trains
This module focuses on spatial transformation, directional reasoning, displacement tracking and applied arithmetic. It is designed to make the underlying process easier to recognise, repeat and review before you add more speed or workload.

- Interpret a sequence of movements, turns and distances.
- Update the aircraft’s facing direction after every relative turn.
- Track net north/south and east/west displacement from the start.
- Answer either the final compass direction or the direct distance, not the total distance travelled.

How the Academy version works

Question count rises from 8 to 16 while the time allowed drops from 3 minutes to 2, increasing pace at higher difficulty.
How scoring works
The result reflects performance in this Academy module. Accuracy is the main signal for decision tasks, while timing, missed targets, false responses or control error can also contribute where the task requires them. Assessment mode is more suitable for trend comparisons than adjustable practice runs.

Build a method that holds up under pressure
Why this becomes difficult
- Left and right are relative to the current heading, not the original one.
- Long routes contain legs that cancel and legs that contribute to net displacement.
- Travelled distance is not the same as straight-line distance from the start.
- One heading error early in the route changes every later interpretation.
Preparation tips
- Update facing direction immediately after every turn.
- Maintain net east-west and north-south displacement separately.
- Pair cancelling legs when you notice them.
- Use right triangles for direct distance and memorise 3-4-5, 5-12-13 and 8-15-17.
- State the cardinal direction first, then combine signs: north plus east means north-east.
Common mistakes
- Adding every route leg and reporting total travel distance.
- Applying a turn relative to the map instead of the current heading.
- Forgetting that a later reverse leg may cancel earlier displacement.
- Using Manhattan distance when the question asks for direct range.
Useful practice drills
- Follow short left/right route descriptions and state final heading only.
- Track x/y displacement on paper during learning, then repeat mentally.
- Practise scaled 3-4-5 and 5-12-13 triangles.
- Build routes with deliberate out-and-back detours and identify which legs cancel.
