Why this becomes difficult

Preparation tips

  • Identify the topic before starting the calculation, the same discipline that pays off on Numerical Reasoning.
  • For direction-sensitive topics, state the direction to yourself before calculating — “eastbound, so add” — to avoid an automatic-but-wrong default.
  • Keep core rates and conversion factors memorised rather than re-derived each time.
  • Use the topic filter in practice mode to drill whichever topic is weakest rather than practising everything evenly.

Common mistakes

  • Applying a time-zone or bearing direction backwards.
  • Confusing rate of climb with rate of descent on a question that specifies one or the other.
  • Rounding too early in a multi-step calculation and compounding the error.
  • Running low on time and guessing the topic type instead of reading the question properly.

Useful practice drills

  • Practise each of the six topics in isolation before mixing them in a timed set.
  • Drill time-zone and bearing direction specifically, since they are the most common source of reversed answers.
  • Use the per-topic weak-area drill after an assessment to target whichever topic scored lowest.
  • Build speed only after accuracy is consistent on a given topic, not before.
