The ADAPT Cognitive Reasoning assessment measures how effectively a candidate processes, understands and works with different types of information — six general cognitive abilities, not aviation knowledge.

What the test measures

Symbiotics currently describes the test as containing 36 questions with a 30-minute time limit. Performance is assessed across six areas: Verbal Reasoning, Numerical Reasoning, Working Memory, Perceptual Speed & Accuracy, Spatial Relationship Reasoning and Abstract Reasoning. The result report considers both accuracy and response speed, as well as performance in the individual cognitive areas.

That makes this one of the broader ADAPT assessments. A candidate can be very strong in one area and noticeably weaker in another, so preparation should not consist of repeatedly practising only the type of reasoning you already find comfortable.

Understanding numerical information quickly enough to use it correctly, not just performing arithmetic.

Verbal Reasoning

Distinguishing what a passage states, what logically follows, and what only sounds plausible.

Working Memory

Holding information while continuing to process or update it, not simply memorising a list.

Perceptual Speed & Accuracy

Finding, comparing or classifying visual information quickly without a rising error rate.

Spatial Relationship Reasoning

Understanding how objects relate when orientation or viewpoint changes.

Abstract Reasoning

Determining the rule connecting unfamiliar shapes, symbols or patterns, with no aviation context.

Preparing each domain

Numerical Reasoning

Numerical reasoning is not simply a test of whether you can perform arithmetic. It is about understanding numerical information quickly enough to use it correctly. You may need to compare quantities, identify relationships, interpret numerical information or perform calculations under time pressure.

Useful areas to practise include percentages, ratios and proportions, fractions and decimals, rates, numerical comparisons, basic mental arithmetic, and extracting relevant values from a larger set of information.

A common problem is spending too long calculating something perfectly. In a timed reasoning assessment, accuracy matters, but so does work rate. If you regularly solve questions correctly but require substantially more time than the other reasoning areas, your numerical ability may not be the issue — the bottleneck may be calculation speed.

Verbal Reasoning

Verbal reasoning tests whether you can understand information and draw conclusions from it. The key skill is distinguishing between what the passage actually states, what can logically be concluded, and what sounds plausible but is not supported.

Worked example

“All training aircraft in Fleet A use engine type X. Aircraft 14 belongs to Fleet A.”

A supported conclusion: Aircraft 14 uses engine type X.

Not supported: Aircraft 14 is newer than every aircraft outside Fleet A. That information was never provided.

A lot of verbal reasoning errors come from adding assumptions to the text rather than misunderstanding the words themselves.

Working Memory

Working memory is the ability to temporarily hold information while continuing to process or update it — different from simply memorising a list. Pilot-selection tests often make this harder by introducing new information before you have finished using the old information.

Worked example

A = 4, B = 7, C = 2. Then: “Increase B by 3. Swap A and C.” You now need to retain the updated state rather than the original one.

Useful training includes remembering changing values, recalling sequences, updating positions, retaining information while solving another task, and distinguishing the current state from a previous state. A useful sign to watch for is one-step lag: repeatedly giving the answer that was correct immediately before the latest update.

Perceptual Speed & Accuracy

Perceptual-speed tasks test how quickly you can find, compare or classify visual information without producing excessive errors. The challenge is the balance between speed and accuracy: going faster is not useful if your false-positive rate rises dramatically, and perfect accuracy can still produce a weak overall result if every comparison takes too long.

A good practice goal: make the visual comparison systematic enough that you can increase speed without changing your decision process. Practise finding small visual differences, comparing groups of symbols, rapid scanning, matching patterns, and identifying a target among similar distractors.

Spatial Relationship Reasoning

Spatial reasoning involves understanding how objects relate to one another when orientation or viewpoint changes — mentally rotating an object, or determining what a scene would look like from another direction. A useful way to improve is to identify which transformations actually cause your errors.

That tells you much more than simply knowing your overall spatial score. If you perform well until the viewpoint reverses, practise perspective changes rather than doing hundreds of easy rotations.

Abstract Reasoning

Abstract reasoning asks you to determine the rule connecting unfamiliar shapes, symbols or patterns — there may be no aviation context at all. Useful relationships to check include number of objects, position, rotation, size, colour, direction, alternation, addition or removal of features, and interaction between two simultaneous rules.

A common mistake is finding one rule that appears to work and answering immediately. Before committing, check whether the rule explains all elements in the sequence.

Speed versus accuracy

Because Symbiotics reports both accuracy and response speed, you should pay attention to both during preparation. There are roughly four patterns you may see in your own practice. Someone with 90% accuracy does not necessarily need the same training as another person with 65% accuracy, even if both receive the same overall practice score.

Fast + accurate

Ideal. Increase difficulty rather than simply increasing speed further.

Fast + inaccurate

Slow down enough to identify why your decisions are failing.

Slow + accurate

Keep the same reasoning method but work on recognition and calculation speed.

Slow + inaccurate

Return to untimed practice and make sure you understand the task before adding time pressure.

A good preparation progression

  1. Stage 1 — find your weakest area. Do one short session in each of the six cognitive domains. Do not immediately repeat the lowest-scoring module — look at why it was low: accuracy, speed, unfamiliarity, or one particular type of item.
  2. Stage 2 — fix the specific bottleneck. If spatial performance collapses on opposing viewpoints, train that. If numerical reasoning is accurate but slow, focus on throughput. If working-memory errors occur after updates, train updating rather than static memorisation.
  3. Stage 3 — mix the domains. A real cognitive battery requires switching between very different types of thinking. A useful mixed session: 8 minutes Numerical Reasoning, 8 minutes Working Memory, 8 minutes Spatial Orientation, 8 minutes Abstract Reasoning.
  4. Stage 4 — reassess. After several targeted sessions, run another standardized assessment rather than repeatedly practising the same items.

Common preparation mistakes

One of the biggest mistakes is practising only the cognitive area you enjoy. Another is memorising answers to a fixed practice set — Symbiotics notes that operational assessments can be generated from question banks, while its consumer practice products may use a fixed practice set. Memorising that fixed set therefore does not represent meaningful improvement in the underlying reasoning skill.

You should also avoid treating every error as a lack of aptitude. Sometimes the issue is simply misunderstanding the task instructions or using a slow strategy.
