What FAST measures
Symbiotics documents FAST as a multitasking and workload-management assessment. Rather than testing one ability in isolation, it runs several simple subtasks concurrently — tracking, monitoring, and resource management are the types most consistently described — and increases the combined demand across the session.
The individual subtasks are deliberately not difficult on their own. What the test is actually observing is how performance on each one holds up, or degrades, once attention has to be split and re-allocated between all of them continuously.
The concurrent subtasks
Tracking
A continuous manual-control task, usually keeping a marker centred against constant drift, running in the background throughout.
Monitoring
Gauges, dials or indicator lights that must be watched for out-of-range readings and responded to as soon as they appear.
Resource management
A periodic task such as balancing values between stores or queues, requiring an occasional deliberate action rather than continuous attention.
Auditory or secondary task
A further input stream layered on top of the visual tasks, competing for the same limited attention.
How workload escalates across the session
FAST does not present its full combined workload from the first second. It builds up, which is part of what it is measuring — not just whether you can perform each subtask, but how you adapt as more get layered on top of each other.

Level 1
Single task
One subtask active at a time. The goal here is pure accuracy: learn each subtask in isolation before anything is combined.

Two tasks combined
Tracking plus one monitoring task run together. This is where most candidates first notice performance on the background task degrading.

Three tasks combined
A resource-management or secondary task is layered on top. Attention now has to be actively allocated, not just divided evenly.

Full workload
All subtasks run concurrently at a sustained pace. This is the level the test is really assessing — how you perform when nothing can be ignored.

Full workload with induced pressure
The same combined load, with event rate, timing or demand increased further to find the point where performance starts to break down.
Where candidates lose marks
These are not knowledge gaps — they are attention-allocation habits, and they are the same handful of patterns regardless of which specific subtasks are used.
Tunnelling on one task
Concentrating on the subtask that feels most urgent while letting the others drift unattended — usually the tracking task decays first because it gives no alarm when ignored.
Reacting instead of scanning
Waiting for something to visibly go wrong rather than checking each subtask on a regular cycle, so problems are caught late.
Over-correcting the tracking task
Making large, late corrections rather than small, continuous ones, which produces bigger drift the moment attention moves elsewhere.
Treating every alert as equal priority
Responding to inputs in the order they appear rather than by how much each one is currently costing you.
Freezing under the induced-pressure level
Performance that is solid at level 3 or 4 but collapses sharply once the pace is pushed further, rather than degrading gradually.
No recovery strategy
Once behind on one subtask, continuing to try to catch up on all of them simultaneously rather than briefly shedding the lowest-priority one to stabilise.
How to train for it
Start by making sure each subtask type is comfortable in isolation — there is no point practising prioritisation if one of the underlying tasks itself is still slow. Then deliberately practise at increasing combined load, the same way the real test escalates: two tasks together, then three, then a sustained full load.
Pay specific attention to what you do in the first few seconds after a new task is added. Candidates who keep their existing tasks stable while absorbing a new one tend to do far better than candidates who let everything degrade equally the moment load increases.
